Postdoctoral Associate

Alex Armengol Urpi

Alex Armengol Urpi is a postdoctoral associate at MIT, specializing in human-computer interfaces, 3D computer vision, and augmented reality (AR).His work builds on his PhD research, which explored novel methods for tacit knowledge extraction using visual attention-based human-computer interfaces.

His thesis investigated how implicit expertise—knowledge that is difficult to verbalize and transfer—can be captured through eye-tracking and EEG-based attention monitoring. He developed hybrid interfaces that integrate neural and gaze-based mechanisms to improve the accuracy of attention-tracking systems, demonstrating that human expertise can be extracted, enhanced, and transferred to AI models. Bridging his expertise in computer vision and human cognition, Alex applies these principles to 3D perception and AR.
